Wire colours
| Positive | Negative | Sheath / Jacket | |
|---|---|---|---|
| IEC 60584-3 (international) | violet | white | violet |
| ASTM E230 / ANSI (USA), extension wire | purple | red | purple |
Colours identify the type, not the quality of the cable. Older national codes (e.g. BS 1843, DIN 43714, JIS) used other colours; check before reusing existing cable.

Typical use and limits
The highest output per degree of the standard types, roughly 60 to 80 µV/°C, so it resolves small temperature differences well. Both legs are non-magnetic. Suited to oxidising and inert atmospheres and to sub-zero work.
