Wire colours
| Positive | Negative | Sheath / Jacket | |
|---|---|---|---|
| IEC 60584-3 (international) | orange | white | orange |
| ASTM E230 / ANSI (USA), extension wire | black | red | green |
Colours identify the type, not the quality of the cable. Older national codes (e.g. BS 1843, DIN 43714, JIS) used other colours; check before reusing existing cable.

Typical use and limits
Platinum-10 % rhodium against platinum: very close to type R with slightly lower output, and long the reference thermocouple for calibration. The same care applies: a clean, oxidising atmosphere and ceramic protection at high temperature.
